112》、《After catching THE Glimpse of LCY144&NEJ720....》(我保證沒有打錯!)。
Finnish conductor and composer Leif Segerstam, known for his eccentricity and prolific output, passed away unexpectedly on October 9. Just months earlier, in March, he celebrated his 80th birthday with a concert at Helsinki's Temppeliaukio Church, exuding vitality despite using a wheelchair due to post-COVID complications. Ever colorful, Segerstam described himself as "almost like Jesus in the music world," claiming his musical truths were as precious as religious teachings.
Segerstam's outlandish personality earned him the nickname "Northern Savage". Famous for his dramatic gestures, dense beard, and shamanic family heritage, he was a towering figure both literally and figuratively in the classical world. His unconventional methods were on full display during a 2015 performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade" with the Galicia Symphony Orchestra, where he led the orchestra in vocalizing storm effects.
While his quirky phrases during rehearsals were legendary among musicians, many struggled to understand his unique use of language. His program notes, such as one for Brahms' "Symphony No. 4"—which likened its theme to two gorillas meeting in a rainforest—revealed his imaginative yet baffling interpretative style.
Born in Vaasa, Finland, in 1944, Segerstam studied violin, piano, and composition at the Sibelius Academy before attending Juilliard for conducting, where he was classmates with James Levine and Leonard Slatkin. He later mentored notable conductors like Santtu-Matias Rouvali and Susanna Mälkki. However, his outspoken nature limited his career largely to Northern and Central Europe.
Segerstam was astonishingly prolific, composing over 370 symphonies. Rejecting classical formats, his works were often single-movement pieces with whimsical titles like "When a cat visited" and "Calling the 112 in woody galaxies of the multiverses...." His compositions, written spontaneously, ranged from deeply emotional to outright bizarre. He described "My compositions are like sperm" to ensure some works would survive the test of time.
Segerstam's outspoken personality often led to controversy. In a 2019 interview, he criticized several prominent figures and orchestras, including his former student Susanna Mälkki, sparking accusations of sexism due to his crude phrasing. Despite backlash, Segerstam unapologetically defended his metaphor-heavy language, comparing music to an intimate, transformative experience.
Segerstam's music and personality, though polarizing, reflected an authentic and unclassifiable creativity. His sudden death marks the end of a unique voice in classical music—a mix of absurdity, innovation, and profound sincerity. As critics have noted, his interpretations may not be traditional classics, but they offer perspectives no one else could replicate, making his contributions an enduring part of musical history.
