「藝術」能不能以比賽來決定高下?我認為演奏可以,藝術不行。先不論評審主觀性的問題,巴爾托克(Béla Bartók)就曾經說過「競賽是為馬,而不是為人準備的」(A verseny lovaknak való, nem embereknek)這句一再被引用的話。甚至有著名比賽高階主管不諱言比賽成功的前提是「所有音符都必須準確無誤,完美是唯一的要求,其他任何異動都無法被容忍」。但是比賽就是現實存在,而且當有人決定參賽的時候,要怎麼面對那些對個人風格顯然百害而無一利的規則呢?
在蒙特利爾音樂學院(Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal)師從理查‧雷蒙(Richard Raymon)的時候,劉曉禹開始參加音樂比賽。二○一四年與二○一六年參加蒙特利爾國際音樂比賽與仙台國際音樂比賽時,雖然分別只入圍決賽以及獲得第四名,兩次比賽都擔任評審的鄧泰山(Thai Son Dang)對劉曉禹的活力與才華留下深刻印象。幾年後,劉曉禹進入蒙特利爾大學(Université de Montré)師事鄧泰山,在一九八○年蕭邦大賽金牌得主鄧泰山的指導與協助下,準備參加二○二○年的蕭邦大賽。

Competitions often prioritize technical perfection, leaving little room for individuality. Yet, Bruce Liu has proven that distinct artistry can triumph on the competitive stage.
Born in 1997 in Joinville-le-Pont, near Paris, Liu grew up in a multicultural environment. After his parents' divorce, he moved with his father to Montréal, Canada, where he was immersed in Mandarin, French, and English. His musical journey began at eight when his father noticed how quietly he sat at a piano during a visit to a friend's home. Encouraged by his father's supportive approach, Liu found joy in exploring music freely, eventually pursuing formal training.
Liu's career took off under the mentorship of Vietnamese pianist Đặng Thái Sơn, the 1980 Chopin Competition winner. With Đặng's guidance, Liu refined his artistry and prepared for the 2020 Chopin Competition, which was postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic. Liu used the extra time to deepen his understanding of Chopin's works, reworking half of his repertoire. His distinctive interpretations and creativity won him the competition's top prize.
Following his victory, Liu's life transformed as he embarked on a whirlwind international performance schedule. Despite the intense demands, he quickly adapted, drawing inspiration from past winners and his own resilience. Liu believes individuality and cultural diversity are crucial in today's globalized world, a principle reflected in his album choices and interpretations.
His recordings of Chopin, Bach, Rameau, and Russian composer Tchaikovsky reveal his unique style, blending lyricism and narrative depth. Liu's performance of Tchaikovsky's The Seasons, for example, captures its personal, reflective nature, offering a meditative respite from his busy life. Every note and phrase is imbued with nuance and emotion, showcasing Liu's profound musicality.
Nicknamed "the Bruce Lee of Piano" by his mentor Đặng Thái Sơn, Liu embodies agility and power in his playing, much like the martial arts legend. Beyond music, Liu's diverse interests in sports and racing enrich his perspective, adding vitality to his artistic expression.
