In 2019, Alexandre Kantorow made headlines by winning the Gold Medal in the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, becoming the first French pianist to achieve this feat. Known for his remarkable talent and vibrant interpretations, Kantorow's success is deeply tied to his musical upbringing as the son of Jean-Jacques Kantorow, a renowned violinist and conductor. The father-son duo has collaborated on several recordings, showcasing a shared passion for music and exceptional artistry.
Born in 1997 in Clermont-Ferrand, France, Alexandre was introduced to music early but was encouraged to view it as a hobby rather than a career during his childhood. He initially played the violin but switched to piano at the age of three, captivated by its versatility. Under the guidance of mentors like Igor Lazko and later Rena Shereshevskaya, Kantorow developed a love for Russian repertoire and a distinct interpretive voice. His victory at the Tchaikovsky Competition also earned him the prestigious Grand Prix, an award given only four times since its inception in 1994.
Kantorow's musical choices reflect his adventurous spirit. In the competition's finals, he performed Tchaikovsky's rarely chosen Piano Concerto No. 2 (original version) and Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2—demanding works that highlighted his stamina and depth. His discography includes Russian-inspired albums and recordings of French and Romantic repertoire, with Brahms often taking center stage. Notable projects include "À la Russe" and a recent album juxtaposing Schubert's "Wanderer Fantasy" with Brahms' Sonata No. 1, bridged by Liszt's transcriptions of Schubert lieder.
Kantorow credits Mikhail Pletnev as a major influence, particularly in shaping his approach to tone and phrasing. Inspired by Pletnev's custom-designed SHIGERU KAWAI piano, Kantorow seeks to create fluid, song-like textures, often likened to "melted butter." His nuanced control of dynamics and color allows him to bring emotional depth and dramatic tension to his performances.
Despite his rapid rise to fame, Kantorow has maintained stability by collaborating with familiar producers and agents. This consistency helps him navigate the pressures of the music world while staying true to his artistic vision. For Kantorow, piano playing is more than technical mastery or score reproduction; it is a dynamic musical journey that evolves with each performance, inviting listeners into a rich and vibrant sound world.
