More than his technique, what stayed with me was the distinctiveness of his musical personality: a finely judged palette of colour, naturally shaped phrasing, and an interpretative voice very much his own. His encore, a Scarlatti sonata, was especially striking: nimble, crisp, and perhaps even more revealing of his character. One Mozart concerto is hardly enough to know Vincent Ong as an artist; by the end of the evening, I found myself wanting to hear him in a full solo recital.
