貝爾與聖馬丁，謝幕之後
謝幕時的貝爾與聖馬丁學院管弦樂團。掌聲熱烈，貝爾的小提琴也確實精彩。不過，回想整場演出，我對樂團各聲部之間的平衡，還是有些自己的感受。
這次樂團大約三十人，以弦樂為主。由貝爾坐在首席位置領奏的演出，許多細節一定要經過充分排練。但是像德弗乍克小提琴協奏曲，管弦樂的層次相當豐富，即使貝爾獨奏時有副首席 Harvey de Souza協助領團，我還是覺得有些地方可以更細緻一些。音樂除了拍子合在一起，還需要呼吸，以及不同聲部之間的平衡與呼應。
看過不少樂團巡迴演出，到了不熟悉的音樂廳，指揮常會請人在台下聽聽效果。畢竟台上聽到的聲音，往往和觀眾席不太一樣。不知道聖馬丁這次在國家音樂廳有多少排練時間，是否也有人從觀眾席協助確認聲響。或許不同座位聽到的效果也有差異，但這是我在欣賞貝爾精彩演奏之餘，對整場音樂會留下的一點想法。

Joshua Bell and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields taking their bows after the concert. The applause was enthusiastic, and Bell’s violin playing was certainly impressive. Still, looking back on the evening, I have a few thoughts about the balance between the different sections of the orchestra.
The ensemble consisted of around thirty musicians, mainly strings. With Bell leading from the first violin’s chair, this kind of performance requires careful preparation and extensive rehearsal. But in a work such as Dvořák’s Violin Concerto, the orchestral writing is richly layered. Even with assistant leader Harvey de Souza helping to guide the orchestra while Bell was playing his solo passages, I felt that some moments could have been more finely balanced. Playing together rhythmically is only part of the music. There also needs to be a shared sense of breathing, with the different sections listening and responding to one another.
Having attended quite a few concerts by touring orchestras, I have often seen conductors ask someone to listen from the auditorium when performing in an unfamiliar hall. After all, what musicians hear on stage can be quite different from what reaches the audience.
I wonder how much rehearsal time the Academy had at the National Concert Hall, and whether anyone listened from the auditorium to check the overall sound and balance. Of course, the experience may vary depending on where one is seated. These are simply a few thoughts that stayed with me after the concert, alongside my enjoyment of Bell’s wonderful playing.
